JEFFERSON DAVIS MONUMENT UNDER THREAT: Camp 1525 Commander Robert Perkins has learned that Edward Sebesta of Dallas, Texas, who goes by the internet alias of "The Crawfish"...a well-known anti-Confederate activist who has lead, and is currently leading, campaigns to have Confederate monuments removed or destroyed in Texas and elsewhere...has recently been in contact with the Superstition Mountain Museum of Apache Junction, Arizona, for information about the Jefferson Davis Highway marker located on U.S. Highway 60 east of Apache Junction. This could possibly be a prelude to a campaign by Sebesta to have this monument removed. Sebesta is very skilled at "playing the media," and is often turned to as a source by reporters writing anti-Confederate articles. So, gentlemen, this is a significant threat. At the most recent Arizona Division Executive Council Meeting, Division Commander Rombach assigned the Captain Granville Henderson Oury Camp 1708 to monitor this situation closely, but all S.C.V. members should be alert for articles and editorials in teir local papers calling for removal of this monument. Please immediately report any such to your Camp Commander or Camp Heritage Officer.

GRAVE OF GRANVILLE OURY DESECRATED: It was reported at the most recent Division Executive Council Meeting that the grave of Granville Henderson Oury, Arizona’s delegate to the Confederate States Congress, which is located in the old Adamsville Cemetery in Florence, Arizona, has been desecrated. A plaque on the grave has been removed by persons unknown. An investigation by law enforcement authorities in ongoing.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENT IN BRUNSWICK, GEORGIA VANDALIZED: Sometime in December someone used bricks to destroy most of the commemorative script carved into the sandstone base of the Confederate War Memorial in Hanover Park, located in downtown Brunswick, Georgia. The Confederate Soldier statue atop the monument also suffered minor damage from bricks which were thrown at it.

This monument is in a public park now bordered by several public housing projects which are continuous areas of crime and drug related offenses. The attack has done extensive and possibly irreparable damage to this monument, and is a terrible loss to the local community and the state of Georgia as a whole.

Due to the extensive damage and the high cost of any possible repairs to the monument the Thomas Marsh Foreman SCV Camp # 485 is accepting financial donations. Send donations to: Monument Repair Fund, c/o Commander Scott Newbern, SCV Camp #485, 7 Patton Dr., Brunswick, GA 31520.

Contact Commander Newbern for more information by email at...scottnewbernsr@yahoo.com.

BEAUVOIR NEEDS YOUR HELP: Beauvoir, the Gulf Coast estate where former Confederate President Jefferson Davis lived his final years, was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina's 145 mph winds and massive storm surge wiped out many structures on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but Beauvoir was left standing. However, the hurricane ripped off the 153-year-old mansion's front and side porches and caused its roof to cave in.

Also left standing at the Biloxi estate is the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library. While its first floor was gutted by the tidal surge, the upstairs archives were not damaged. The contents of the house and library have been retrieved and are now in safe storage. However, Katrina destroyed the library pavilion, where Davis wrote his memoirs. Also leveled were the Confederate Soldiers' Museum and all other buildings on the Beauvoir property.

The antebellum mansion has been stabilized and its roof sealed as renovation plans get drawn and money raised to bring it back to the way it was. The big problem, of course, is money. An estimated $32 million is needed to renovate Davis' house and the adjacent library. If you would like to help out, donations to the Beauvoir Relief Fund can be sent to P.O. Box 7, Meridian, MS 39302-0007.
