ARIZONA DIVISION, S.C.V.

THE ADJUTANT'S REPORT

The Arizona Division held its quarterly Executive Council meeting on 14 January 2006 at the Marie Callender's Restaurant in Chandler. Six of our seven Camps were represented. The following is a synopsis of that meeting.

First, Commander Rombach presented the Camp Charter to Commander Clyde England and Compatriot Jeff Bone of the Private Nathan Terry Wanslee Camp 2096 of Safford. Our newest Camp brings the Division to seven Camps and the Gadsden Brigade to four Camps.

The Division’s finances are in good shape and future expenses are expected to drop due to the innovation of putting the Division newsletter in an electronic format.

Recruiting and Retention: Since June, 2005, 28 gentlemen have been contacted concerning membership. Of those 28, 1 reactivated his membership, 1 transferred into an Arizona Camp and 12 new members joined. The division didn’t do so well on retention, every Camp except 2074 and 2096 lost members! Gentlemen, we need to put some emphasis on retention as well as recruiting in the coming year!

Division Heritage Officer Curt Tipton relayed a report from Camp 1525 Commander Perkins of a potential heritage violation involving the Jefferson Davis Monument located on U.S. Highway 60 east of Apache Junction. Apparently, Edward Sebesta of Dallas, Texas...a well-known anti-Confederate activist...has recently taken an interest in the monument, which could possibly be a prelude to a campaign by Sebesta to have this monument removed (a fuller report appears in THE SENTINEL section of this newsletter). Division Commander Rombach assigned the Captain Granville Henderson Oury Camp 1708 to monitor this situation closely.

The DEC considered the appeal of one T. Duke Duvall concerning his membership termination by Camp 1710. The DEC upheld the Camp’s action and forwarded Duvall’s case file to IHQ. He has filed an appeal with the GEC which will be heard on 11 February at Elm Springs.

The DEC also defined the levels of membership within the Division. They are "full membership", "dual membership" and "associate membership." Full membership is self-explanatory. Dual members are those Compatriots who hold membership in a "home" Camp and are enumerated for voting purposes in that Camp but hold a membership in an Arizona Camp. Associate members are those gentlemen who either are not descendants or do not have the requisite documentation but never-the-less support our Charge.

The Council voted to prorate Division dues on the same formula as IHQ has prorated the national per capita tax. Contact your Camp Adjutant for details.

The Council also approved a resolution removing the Captain James H. Tevis Chapter of the MOS&B from the Division. This action was taken because of the severance of ties at the national level between the SCV and the MOS&B—at the instigation of the MOS&B. Commander Bobby Morris was appointed as the liaison officer with the MOS&B. Other items of business were tabled.

I hope to see many of y’all at the "Civil War in the Southwest" event at Picacho Peak State Park. The Division has registered all seven Camps and has space reserved.

I remain, Gentlemen, very respectfully, your obedient servant.

Curt Tipton
